Wilson Launches Fundations® Ready to Rise™ to Accelerate Summer and Fall Reading Instruction

OXFORD, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#FundationsWilson Language Training® has launched Fundations® Ready to Rise, an early literacy program for young learners in need of summer reading support or an intensive boost at the start of the new school year. The goal of this 20-day, in-person program is to move forward — not to review all past content. It targets key decoding, transcription, and fluency skills to prepare students for Level 1 or 2 of Fundations, a foundational skills program.

“We developed the Ready to Rise program to help teachers instruct their rising first and second graders with a laser focus so their students can master key foundational skills in preparation for their upcoming year,” said Wilson Language Training Author and Co-Founder Barbara A. Wilson.

Ready to Rise aligns with the research-based recommendations of Professor of Education Dr. David Steiner, Executive Director of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Education Policy. As such, the program:

  • Identifies a small number of key skills and core knowledge essential for the next school year’s success.
  • Focuses on the mastery of those key skills.
  • Assesses students to determine progress toward that mastery.

The Ready to Rise Program for Rising First Graders is suited for Fundations students currently in kindergarten who are advancing to first grade during the 2021-2022 school year. The Ready to Rise Program for Rising Second Graders is geared toward students currently in first grade who will use Fundations in Level 2.

Using a 90-minute lesson format, instruction is divided into three 30-minute components: Word Study, Transcription, and Application & Fluency Skills. These may all be taught by one teacher, or sequentially with a different instructor for each component. The Word Study component targets phonemic awareness, the alphabetic principle, sound and word accuracy/automaticity, and high frequency word recognition. The Transcription skills component addresses letter formation/automaticity, spelling, and sentence dictation/punctuation. The Application & Fluency skills component focuses on the application of decoding and encoding skills and provides fluency instruction with connected text.

Several districts are incorporating Ready to Rise because:

  • Foundational skills are fundamental to reading and writing success.
  • It uses high-dosage instruction with an opportunity to accelerate learning.
  • It’s directly related to their existing Fundations instruction.
  • Professional learning/resources provide guidance for staff.
  • The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund may be used to support implementation.

Educators with Fundations teaching experience who have attended a Fundations Introductory or Launch workshop are prepared to teach Ready to Rise. Other educators may also teach the program by participating in the Ready to Rise Workshop and following the Teacher Guide.
