Dems to nominate Biden ahead of convention

Democrats intend to formally nominate President Joe Biden as their party’s nominee by using a virtual roll call weeks before their August convention in Chicago, a move to minimize possible protests during the convention. It is also an attempt to get on the Ohio ballot ahead of an Aug. 7 deadline for certifying candidates there.

The Democratic National Committee said the virtual process will enable Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to receive their party’s formal nomination in a similar manner as in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thousands remain without power after Sunday tornado, storms

Linemen continue to work to restore power to thousands in southern Illinois after Sunday’s storms. One of the biggest obstacles for work crews is the number of power poles broken in half.

Officials said about 37,000 customers lost power and access to some of the rural areas is more difficult with storm damage. The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-3 tornado hit Johnson County with more reports expected in the coming days.

Police car totaled during pursuit

The squad car was damaged when it was hit by a semi while in pursuit. The driver of the stolen truck, 36-year-old Nathanial Sperry of Decatur, was taken into custody.
