Chicago NASCAR race this weekend

The final touches are being added as Chicago gets ready for NASCAR racing downtown. Major road closures are now in place near the lakefront. On Saturday, the Xfinity series race will cover 110 miles and 50 laps. On Sunday, the cup series race takes place that involves 75 laps and 165 miles. Unlike last year when the racing took place during a pouring rain, sunny skies are expected both days.

Statewide mowing ongoing

The Illinois Department of Transportation is reminding the public that roadside mowing is underway and motorists need to slow down and pay attention while behind the wheel. During the summer, IDOT conducts two types of mowing. Safety mowing occurs adjacent to the road when needed to improve visibility. Maintenance mowing, which began July 1 and last about six weeks, includes areas next to culverts, ditches and traffic control devices. The heaviest mowing operations will continue until Aug. 15.
