Illinois quick hits: Beryl remnants move through Illinois; Amtrak train derails
Beryl remnants move through Illinois
Most of Illinois will get soaking rains Tuesday as the remnants of Hurricane Beryl move through the state.
Some areas could receive up to four inches of rain or more as the tropical system slowly moves northeast. Severe weather is a possibility in southern Illinois.
Flood watches have been posted for numerous Illinois counties as the rain is expected to fall into Wednesday.
Amtrak train derails
A Chicago-bound Amtrak train struck a tree Monday and derailed in Missouri. The incident happened just outside Washington, Missouri.
Officials said the rear axle of the locomotive lost contact with the tracks but remained upright. There were no reported injuries among the 124 passengers and five crew members.
Flooding had been reported in the area, but it is not known if weather conditions contributed to the incident.
Steps taken to limit avian flu
In an effort to minimize the spread of avian influenza, the Illinois Department of Agriculture announced an intrastate testing requirement for lactating dairy cattle participating in livestock exhibitions in Illinois.
While Illinois currently has no reported cases of H5N1 in dairy cattle, 12 states have confirmed cases. Testing requirements apply to lactating dairy cattle being exhibited at county fairs, the Illinois State Fair, the Du Quoin State Fair and any other livestock exhibition held in Illinois.
