First race riot markers to be unveiled in Chicago

On a summer day in July 1919, a group of Black teenagers with a wooden raft drifted near a Lake Michigan beach in Chicago used by white beachgoers. One teen was stoned by a white man and eventually drowned. When police refused to arrest the man, tensions mounted, and a riot ensued, which led to the deaths of 38 people. The first five of 38 commemorative glass markers will be unveiled during a Saturday ceremony near the Illinois Institute of Technology.
