The paper “SPADENet” presents a novel architecture to represent the overall game state and evaluate optimal player actions in skill-based card games, using online rummy as a case study. The IEEE Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IEEE CAI) is a premier international event that brings together researchers, practitioners, and industry experts to discuss the latest advancements in artificial intelligence. The conference is organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), one of the world’s largest technical professional organizations dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.

 Real-world Impact

Such a framework can be leveraged to build the player ecosystem for any skill-based card game. It empowers the gaming platforms to quickly profile and benchmark the players’ skills. The platforms can then design personalized learning and development journeys for the players. For a new player on the platform who needs to learn the ropes quickly, it may act as a Decision Support System while for experienced players, it can help them understand the occasional but costly mistakes they make from time to time. This is particularly important in Real Money Gaming, where players use their own money and depend on their skills to influence game outcomes.

 Efficacy:

  1. The models built for Online Rummy using SPADENet architecture showed improvement in Test F1-score across all Rummy variants with the highest being for Pool-6P from 0.767 (existing best-performing method) to 0.908 (18% increase).
  2. The odds of favourable game outcomes for Drop or Play action in Online Rummy also increased when players followed SPADENet model recommendations. To assess this, about 68000 instances of Pool-6p games were randomly selected and examined. When the players’ behaviour was in line with the model recommendation (~62,600), they ended up with favourable outcomes in 72% of those games. In contrast, when players chose a different action (~5400), they could only turn the outcome in their favour in ~50% of them. This difference came out to be statistically significant.
