West Virginia senator loses committee roles following indecent exposure arrest

(The Center Square) – Republican West Virginia Senator Mike Maroney has been removed from his committee chairman responsibilities and committee appointments after he was arrested and charged with two misdemeanors in Marshall County on Tuesday.

Senate President Craig Blair, R-Berkeley, said Maroney, R-Marshall, is entitled to due process.

Maroney was arrested for indecent exposure and disorderly conduct after he was “accused of performing an overt act of self gratification” at a gaming parlor in Glendale, 7News reported.

“The facts that have emerged are troubling, and I am disappointed. However, in this time, our primary focus is on the well-being of Sen. Maroney,” Blair said in a statement.

Glendale Chief Ed Vogel responded to a police call to the gaming parlor and “found Michael Maroney in the gaming room alone and was identified by the females just as the person that they saw on the surveillance video,” Marshall County Prosecutor Joe Canestraro told 7News.

“While the charges are still under investigation, if true, this allegation is obviously not up to the standard of what we expect from our elected leaders in the State Senate of West Virginia,” Blair said.
