Wausau council doesn’t hear mayor’s drop box security resolution
(The Center Square) – The Wausau Common Council chose not to take up and vote on a resolution this week from Mayor Doug Diny to add security for its ballot drop box.
Diny had proposed the council suspend its rules and hear Diny’s resolution on security but the motion was met with silence, meaning it was not considered or voted on.
The proposed motion came after 20 members of the public spoke on the topic during the public comment portion of the meeting.
The issue came up after Diny gained attention and an investigation was launched following his removal of an outdoor ballot drop box that was not yet in use.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the matter.
The drop box is now in use.
Drop boxes have become a hot issue in Wisconsin this election cycle with following a Wisconsin state Supreme Court ruling allowing their use but not requiring it.
Previously, the court had blocked the use of ballot drop boxes after the 2020 presidential election.
