Illinois quick hits: School report card released; more field fires

School report card released

The Illinois State Board of Education has released its annual school report card, a snapshot on how the state’s over 850 school districts are performing and the costs associated with instruction.

In fiscal year 2023, operational spending per student in Illinois was nearly $19,000. Operational spending per student includes all costs for overall operations, including instructional spending.

Testimony continues in Madigan trial

Court proceedings are back in session at the bribery and racketeering trial of former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Madigan and Democratic Party of Illinois staffer Will Cousineau returned to the witness stand after beginning his testimony Tuesday. Prosecutors played a recording of Madigan and co-defendant Michael McClain talking about political appointments with Cousineau and other staffers.

Madigan suggested the goal should be to “make as many people happy as possible.”

More field fires

Field fires continue to be a problem in Illinois. Multiple Vermilion County fire departments were called to assist on a large fire near Ogden Tuesday.

Two additional fires started in Iroquois County, prompting several volunteer fire departments to respond. Burning bans have been issued across the state and windy conditions will persist Wednesday.

Much-needed rain is expected for much of Illinois Thursday morning.
