athenahealth adds 24 Clinics to its Free Clinic Partnership Program in 2021

Through the program, athenahealth provides free clinician experience and support services to nearly 400 free and charitable clinics across the United States to help deliver healthcare for underserved and under-resourced communities

WATERTOWN, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–athenahealth, Inc., a leading provider of network-enabled software and services for medical groups and health systems nationwide, today announced that it added 24 clinics to its Free Clinic Partnership Program in 2021. Through athenaGives, athenahealth’s corporate social responsibility program, nearly 400 clinics have access to athenahealth’s clinician experience and support services at no cost to them. This represents more than a quarter of all the free and charitable clinics in the United States. Through the Free Clinic Partnership Program, these organizations have access to athenaClinicals, athenahealth’s web-based EHR system; athenaCommunicator, a patient interaction and engagement service; and athenaTelehealth. By partnering with free and charitable clinics across the country, athenahealth is providing a key resource needed by these clinics to deliver high-quality healthcare to those who otherwise might not have access.

Today in the United States, more than 31 million Americans lack health insurance. athenahealth’s Free Clinic Partnership Program leverages its network to allow free and charitable clinics to deliver high-quality care to underserved patients and communities. These clinics, many of which are run by volunteers, provide a range of specialty care, including behavioral health, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and urgent care, among others.

“Without these free and charitable clinics, many patients would not have access to the care they need. We hope that by providing our technology and services, athenahealth can contribute to an equitable healthcare system where no patient is turned away,” said Bob Segert, chairman and chief executive officer at athenahealth. “In 2020 alone, our Free Clinic Partners conducted more than 480,000 visits, half of which provided care to patients living in low-income zip codes. We look forward to adding more partners to the program in 2022 to ensure accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.”

Clinics selected to the program have access to free implementation of athenahealth’s technology and services as well as ongoing customer support and resources for as long as they remain in the program. To apply to the Free Clinic Program, free and charitable clinics must have 501(c)(3) status, carry adequate liability insurance, and must not bill payors or accept claim payments.
