Atlanta to host Super Bowl in 2028

(The Center Square) – The Super Bowl is coming back to Atlanta following the 2027 season, marking the fourth time the NFL championship game has been played in Georgia’s capital city.

It will be the 62nd playing of the most-watched television event in America. Last year’s game drew an audience of more than 123 million. New Orleans hosts after this season, followed by San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The decision was made by the NFL’s Fan Engagement & Major Events Committee and a vote by full ownership, according to the announcement Tuesday from the Atlanta Falcons and the league.

The game will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and will be the second one at the venue in less than 10 years. The New England Patriots beat the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 in the February 2019 contest, the lowest-scoring Super Bowl in history, according to the NFL.

The Georgia Dome hosted the Atlanta Super Bowls in 1994 and 2000.

“Renowned for its hospitality and rich sports and entertainment culture, Atlanta is a world-class event destination and a natural fit for Super Bowl 62,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said. “Arthur Blank has been a transformative figure in the Atlanta community, playing a crucial role in leading the bid to bring the Super Bowl back to the city. I have been fortunate to witness firsthand how Arthur continues to drive community engagement and economic development in the Atlanta community through his unwavering commitment to sports and philanthropy.”

Blank said hosting the game is a “tremendous honor.”

“Mercedes-Benz Stadium was built to host the world’s largest sporting events, and I know I speak for many when I say we are honored to bring it back to Atlanta in 2028 and build off the success of Super Bowl LIII in 2019,” Blank said.

Hosting the Super Bowl also means the city will host other events, including NFL Honors and the Super Bowl Experience.

“As we made clear throughout the process, no city is better positioned than Atlanta to host events of this magnitude,” said Dan Corso, president of the Atlanta Sports Council and Atlanta Super Bowl Bid Committee.

It’s the second large sporting event announced for Atlanta in the past year. Major League Baseball said last November that the 2025 All-Star Game will be played at Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves.
