BPCL announced a ₹200 crore investment this Fiscal for 2,000 EV charging Stations.

BPCL has announced to set up 2,000 EV charging stations along the busiest highway with a 200 crore investment. Recently the company opened its first EV charging corridors on the Chennai-Trichi-Madhuri highway with one charging unit. Now company planned to set up a second corridor on the Kochi-Salem highway. BS Ravi, Executive Director at BPCL, said- “We have allotted Rs 200 crore this fiscal as we plan to set up as many 2,000 fast-charging stations across 100 corridors by March 2023. BPCL has plans to install 7,000 fast EV charging stations in the next three years.” BS Ravi also said that if a charging unit does not need a booster transformer, then it would be turned into a full-fledged venue consisting of restrooms, a food court, and other amenities. But if there is a need for a booster transformer, the cost will go higher, up to 25 lakh. The company will seek incentives from the Centre or the state government as the charging stations will not be commercially viable in the initial stages due to fewer visits from people. The company has also planned a third corridor to be set- up at Mumbai-Bengaluru National Highway 4.

Due to petrol price rising day by day, the sales of electric vehicles been increasing in recent times. As per the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), the electric vehicle sales in India have increased by three times in FY21. Most of the sales increased by two-wheelers. MG motors stood first as per the sales unit, and Tata Motors stood second with 15,200 units, Mahinda at fourth with 156 dispatch units, and Hyundai at fourth with 128 dispatch units of EV four-wheeler segments.

Hero Electric has jumped to five multiple sales in the EV two-wheeler segment with 65,300 units. Okinawa Autotech has 46,447 units of sale, and Ampere Vehicles has a sales unit of 24,648 units. Ola electric stayed in the sixth position for selling 14,370 units of Ev two-wheeler. 

This rapid increase in electric vehicles leads BPCL to announce the project of investing a huge amount in setting up EV charging corridors.
