Election 2024: McCormick favored to win in Georgia’s U.S. House District 7

(The Center Square) – Republican incumbent Rich McCormick is favored to win in Georgia’s U.S. House District 7, which has been labeled “solidly Republican” by every race tracker.

Challenged by Democrat Bob Christian and independent Charles King, McCormick significantly leads fundraising.

This race is one of 14 U.S. House races in Georgia and none of them are predicted to shake up the current partisan breakdown of nine Republicans and five Democrats. Thirteen of the 14 incumbents lead in fundraising.

Christian is running to “protect against MAGA extremism” in a now heavily-Republican district.

This is a recent change, after Georgia conducted redistricting in between this election and the 2022 midterms.

So, while Democrats won District 7 in 2022, Republicans are now strongly favored. The district is located in the northeastern part of the state, just outside the suburbs of Atlanta.

Both candidates won their primaries unchallenged, though McCormick received significantly more votes than Christian did.

Christian said the district needs political change.

“Rich McCormick has spent two years rubber stamping MAGA legislation, blocking progressive laws that would help North Georgia,” Christian’s campaign website says, referring to the Donald Trump theme of Make America Great Again.

Christian has called on Republicans who are against the former president to join in voting for him and Vice President Kamala Harris.

He has also prioritized issues like climate change, human rights, and gun safety.

McCormick was first elected to office in 2022, representing the 6th Congressional District.

He is running to “revive freedom” and “save America.”

A former U.S. Marine pilot and emergency room doctor, McCormick is prioritizing issues like jobs, health care, and protecting the Second Amendment.

“Joe Biden has unleashed an unrelenting assault on our core values,” his campaign website says. “2024 might be our last chance to Revive Freedom and Save America. A decorated Marine, Rich McCormick is prepared to lead this battle.”

McCormick has brought in nearly 100 times the amount of money that Christian brought in.

According to campaign finance records, McCormick has raised $1.6 million and has more than $445,000 cash on hand; Christian has raised about $16,000 and has just over $5,400 cash on hand.
