Illinois quick hits: Construction workers hurt in collapse; DUI enforcement for Labor Day

Construction workers hurt in collapse

Two construction workers were seriously hurt when the unfinished wooden frame they were working on collapsed Wednesday in Casey.

The collapse happened at Westside Church of Christ, which has been undergoing renovation this summer. During construction of a 4,500-square-foot addition, the wooden roof trusses came crashing to the ground. The church said both were airlifted to Champaign.

Coach resigns after comments

The head volleyball coach at Amundsen High School in Chicago has resigned from her position after criticism that followed disparaging comments made on a radio show about vice presidential nominee Tim Walz’s son.

Amy Jacobson mimicked Gus Walz’s emotional reaction when his father took the stage. Gus Walz has a learning disorder that’s said to limit a person’s ability to read social cues.

DUI enforcement for Labor Day

As the last weekend of summer approaches, the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Police will be sending a clear message about drunk driving.

To help keep roads safe, more than 200 local law enforcement agencies are joining IDOT and ISP in enforcing the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” safety campaign. During the campaign, which runs through the Labor Day weekend, ISP, and local police and sheriff’s departments are increasing patrols and enforcement.
