Illinois quick hits: Tornadoes confirmed, Jo Daviess County leads in turkey totals

Tornadoes confirmed

The National Weather Service reports an EF-3 tornado touched down in Johnson County Sunday. The agency sent a survey crew to the Lake of Egypt area where they determined the tornado had peak winds of 150 mph.

There was one reported injury from the twister. Two EF-1 tornadoes have been confirmed in Clinton County in Metro East. Several businesses were damaged in Carlyle and New Baden.

Passengers safely evacuated after engine fire

A plane scheduled to depart O’Hare International Airport Sunday was forced to evacuate after one of its engines caught fire.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane stopped takeoff when a fire was detected in one of the engines. The flight, which was bound for Seattle, was towed to the gate and passengers were able to safely exit the plane.

Jo Daviess County leads in turkey totals

Illinois hunters harvested a preliminary statewide record total of 17,208 wild turkeys during the 2024 Illinois spring turkey season.

This year’s total compares with last year’s statewide harvest of 16,123 and the previous harvest record total of 16,569, set during the spring season in 2006. The top three counties for the spring turkey harvest were Jo Daviess, Jefferson and Marion counties.

The 2024 harvest total includes the record youth turkey harvest of 2,009 birds.
