West Virginia sales tax holiday runs Friday through Monday

(The Center Square) – West Virginia will hold its back-to-school sales tax holiday from Friday through Monday on certain clothing, computers and school supplies.

The sales tax waiver applies to sports equipment that costs $150 or less, clothing items that are $125 or less, laptop or tablet computers that cost $500 or less, school instruction material that costs $20 or less and school supplies that cost $50 or less.

Separately sold belt buckles, clothing accessories, protective equipment and sewing equipment do not count as clothing for the tax-free holiday.

The computer sales tax exemption does not apply to purchases for a business or trade.

If a retailer offers a discount or store coupon to reduce the price of an item to less than the threshold amount for the exemption, then the item will qualify for the exemption.

The sales tax holiday applies to both state and local sales tax collections.

The average customer will save at least 6% on every qualified purchase and up to 7% if they purchase the item in a municipality that has imposed a local sales tax, according to Gov. Jim Justice’s office.
